For All Time

Hi, everyone! Welcome back to Life on the {Scrap}beach!

When I made the 4"x6" "Time" album, I didn't have specific plans for it. I was asked by more than one person what I planned to do with it, so I decided to show you what it looks like now that it has pictures and journaling. I changed the title to "For All Time" and turned it into a wedding album, and you can see the video below:

And since we were all chatting about weddings and wedding albums in the comments on yesterday's post, I decided to share one of my wedding pictures with all of you. This picture is of my wedding cake {a.k.a. the Fertility Cake} and I was so happy with how it turned out:

This lovely photo {which also includes a shot of my bridemaid's bouquet} was taken by Seth Roberts of Captured Movement Photography in Richmond, VA.

Now, I kow you're all wondering why I referred to my wedding cake as a fertility cake. While I was still in Virginia, one of my employees retired and I called the baker who had done the cake for my wedding reception {because it was very tasty, which is not something that can be said for most wedding cakes, in my opinion} to order a cake for the retirement party.

When I called the baker to place the order, he asked me how I had heard of them. So I told him about ordering the cake for my wedding reception. And he said, "Oh! Did you have triplets?"

So I said, "Um...?"

And then he said, "Because a lot of the women who have us do their wedding cakes have triplets."

To which I replied, "Well, no triplets here! Heh heh heh ... so, um, don't you think that's something you should have mentioned before I ordered the cake!?"

Their cakes should totally come with a warning label: eating this cake may cause multiple births. It's probably the only wedding cake bakery that includes Clomid with the eggs and flour. I had to call all the women of childbearing age who had attended my reception to apologize in advance if they experienced an unexpected spike in fertility.

It still tasted good, though.

Final Score is Kathryn: 3, Half Marathon Album: 0

Hi, everyone! Welcome back to Life on the {Scrap}beach! I hope you all enjoyed your weekend!

I would like to report that I have now conquered the Half Marathon Mini Album and it is DONE! WOO-HOO! :D It was touch and go there for a while, but I finally prevailed and managed to finish it without pulling out all my hair. YES!

I'm not going to post pics, because I was too exhausted after I finished it to actually take any. However, I will be featuring the album in a video series, so you will get to see it all in excruciating detail soon! I'm pretty sure it will end up being something like 52 parts since it took forever, but you'll just have to wait and see.

{Scrap}ping Buddies

Hi, everyone! Welcome back to Life on the {Scrap}beach!

I don't have much to report right now, as I am bogged down in a mini album project that alternately makes me want to cry, scream and tear my hair out and I just want to get it done! ::sob:: Do you ever have projects like that? They just steal your creativity and take forever to complete? I don't usually, since I tend to be good about not putting obligations and deadlines on myself, BUT my husband's half marathon album is partially finished and it is just killing me for some reason that all its pieces and parts are strewn about my workspace.

ANYWAY, so I have to get back to it before I lose any and all desire to scrap and spend the rest of the day crying in a corner because the half marathon album won't just scrap itself. Before I go, I wanted to share a little pic with you of my furry little scrapping buddies!

That's Bongo on the left and Hoodwink on the right {with the cup on his head as a makeshift helmet}. They appear to be having some kind of paintbrush duel and maybe were trying to tie each other up with ribbon...? Who understands monkeys? Not me!

They may not be the most coordinated croppers on the block, but they sure are cute!

P.S. Yes, that is a different mat than you are used to seeing from the videos ~ my you blog readers have sharp eyes! The mat in the picture above is a lime green Fiskars self-healing quilting mat I had before my current mat {also a self-healing quilting mat, but from Gingher this time around} and was actually a gift from my {much} younger brother.

Sadly, my Fiskars mat was mortally wounded in the Unfortunate Heat Gun Incident of 2008 and was no longer physically able to perform its duties. It was given an honorable discharge and, last I heard, had retired to Boca.

Video: Beach Mini Album, Part Three

Hi, everyone! Welcome back to Life on the {Scrap}beach!

I hope no one had to be rushed to the hospital last night for a ruptured spleen caused by too much laughing. Everybody take a deep breath and just relax ~ today's post is not going to be nearly as funny, although I hope it is still entertaining!

I uploaded a new video over on my YouTube Channel. It's the final part of my 5"x5" custom chipboard beach/ocean theme album, so you'll get to see all the pages ~ even the ones you missed because my camera wasn't working.

This little album is decorated with papers and embellishments from the Heidi Grace "Beyond the Sea" line which is actually on sale right now at Two Peas in a Bucket for 50% off!

Thanks for watching & I hope you enjoyed it!

Sharing {Funny} Scrapbooking Stories

Hi, everyone! Welcome back to Life on the {Scrap}beach!

So, I haven't mentioned this before, but I am really clumsy. I mean really, really clumsy. Like, one time I was leaning against a wall, not moving, and chatting with some friends and I fell over. Just literally fell over. {This actually happened years ago and the friends that were with me still bring it up: No, Susie, she just fell over! It was the strangest thing!} It is also a pretty common occurence for me to trip while walking on perfectly flat ground and walk into the walls of my house. Which, considering they haven't moved at all in the nine months we've lived here, is pretty sad.

When people look at me funny, I tell them I have an inner ear problem.

Basically this means that I spend a great deal of my time 1. looking strange, 2. hurting myself, and 3. pondering where I got XYZ bruise/scrape/cut/burn/etc., as I often don't remember.

This clumsiness also translates into my scrapbooking. I hurt myself a lot while I am scrapbooking. Like there was the time I thought my retractable X-Acto was retracted and went to click the button to make the blade pop out only to discover that 1. it wasn't retracted and 2. that wasn't the button that makes the blade pop out, it was the blade. Ouch! Who knew scrapping could be so dangerous? Not me!

My all time greatest scrapping blooper has got to be from when my friend and I altered an ATG together. For ease of storytelling, lets just call her "Kim." Which works out pretty well, because that's actually her name. Anyway, Kim and I were in the parking lot behind our local scrapbook store, taking a cropping break to alter her ATG. So we had put down newspaper all over the asphalt so we could spray primer on this ATG. It was going to start raining in about ten seconds, so we wanted to spray the gun quickly and then bring it inside before it got wet.

I don't remember if I thought Kim was taking too long, or if I didn't like her spray paint technique, or if I thought I was an ATG spray painting genius because this was the third one I was altering, but for whatever reason, I was all, "Kim, you're doing it wrong. Give me the spray paint." And she gave me the eyeroll that essentially means, "Yeah, whatever ~ I was handling this just fine on my own, but I am giving you what you want because you have crazy eyes." And then I, in my infinite wisdom and vast spray painting experience, said, "THIS is how you do it."

And then sprayed myself in the face. Right. In. The. Face.

Yes, ladies, I sprayed myself in the face with a can of black Krylon Fusion. Not only that, but my mouth was open. Yum! Then it just became a comedy of errors as Kim and I rolled around in the parking lot screeching with laughter and unable to speak or breathe. Then we did finally get the gun painted before the rain started falling but it was a near miss.

So, there's my funny/embarrassing scrapbooking tale. I want to hear yours! I know you have them: bizarre injurious, crop nightmares, strange photo ops, etc. Come on ~ don't be shy! I told you mine!

And Now for Something Completely Different

Hi, everyone! Welcome back to Life on the {Scrap}beach!

Before I lived in Miami, I lived in Northern Virginia and I worked in the Ballston neighborhood of Arlington, VA. My friend sent me this video to remind me of what I'm missing and it is so true!

I was crying! :D Those of you from Northern Virgnia or Washington, DC know what I'm talking about!

Those of you not familiar with Arlington, just sub in the name of any overpriced yuppified metro area right outside a major city and you'll get the idea.

My {Scrap} Process: Cards

Hi, everyone! I hope you're enjoying Life on the {Scrap}beach!

This is the third in a three part series where I examine my creative process. This entry will focus on my process for creating cards. The first part focused on my process for creating layouts, and second part focused on my process for creating mini albums.

This entry is going to be quite a bit shorter than the others. My card-making process starts when I pull apart a page kit. If I have any cardstock scraps are big enough to make a card base {either 4.25"x11" or 5.5"x8.5"}, I cut them down into a card base right away and store them separately from my other cardstock scraps. This ensures that I always have a good stack of card bases in a variety of colors.

When I am making cards, I always make two. The reason being that I think it is just as easy to make two cards as it is to make one {since the hard part is coming up with the design} and making two gives me a good supply of "emergency cards" for when I need one in a hurry.

I start with my stamps, because I like to have one big stamped image to go with my sentiment. Then I choose my patterned paper and embellishments from there. I usually just grab scraps from one of my page kits that coordinates with my theme and my sentiment and go from there. And since most of my cards are mailed, I try to keep the design very simple ~ usually just some patterned paper strips, one large stamp and maybe some ribbon.

What's your card-making creative process?

My {Scrap} Process: Mini Albums

Hi, everyone! Welcome back to Life on the {Scrap}beach!

This is the second in a three part series where I examine my creative process. This entry will focus on my process for creating mini albums. The first part focused on my process for creating layouts, and the third part will focus on my process for creating cards.

Like my layout creative process, my mini album process can be broken out into two distinct starting points as well:

1) Starting from a page kit. This is the process I use if I have a very specific idea in mind of what I want my mini album to be. I used this process in several of my videos, such as my Seaquarium mini album and my Christmas mini album.

OR

2) Absolute and total chaos and anarchy. This is the process I use if I have a general idea for a mini album, but not a specific plan on how to carry it off. I used this "process" in the creation of my Engagement mini album.

Okay, so what does this actually mean for my creative process? Let me see if I can break it down a little bit more.

The first creating process is very similar to that of my layouts. Since I have a strong idea in my head of what the finished product should look like, I choose photos and page kit and mini album and just get started. I still make decisions as I go ~ I don't usually use sketches, for example ~ but since I know what I want it to look like when I am finished, the decisions are easy to make.

The second creating process is quite a bit different. Usually when I am doing a mini album with the CHAOS process ~ like the Engagement mini album ~ I start with a vague idea & try to use all scraps if possible.

With the Engagement mini album, my idea was that I wanted a small book that was soft and romantic. That was it!

I had one picture & it was sepia toned, so I pulled all my cream-colored scraps and put them on my desk. Then I wanted some more color, so I pulled my pink and blue scraps and put them on my desk. Then I put any stamps and inks that worked with the theme/feel on my desk. I grabbed some brads and other embellishments and added them to the pile as well. I just kept grabbing stuff I might use until I had a huge pile of things on my desk. If you watch the first video in the Engagement mini album series, you can see the pile of stuff on my desk.

By the time I'm done making my pile, I have, essentially, created a page kit. So I an now sit down at my desk and start pulling papers together and pushing elements around until I like how it looks enough to glue it down.

I am equally happy with the creations from both processes ~ I like the Seaquarium and Engagement mini albums equally well, for example ~ but it is much easier to clean up after if I am using page kits!

My {Scrap} Process: Layouts

Hi, everyone! Welcome back to Life on the {Scrap}beach ~ I hope you're enjoying yourselves immensely!

I wanted to take a little time to talk about my creative process since I've been getting a few questions about aspects of it: whether I use sketches, how I choose papers, colors, etc. So, I thought I would just go over it and clear it all up. At least, I hope it clears everything up for you ~ it may actually just make everyone more confused! :D In this blog entry, I'll be focusing on layouts. I will do two more blog entries on this subject: one related to my process for creating mini albums, and one related to my process for creating cards.

I always felt that my creative process was a little bit backwards from what most people probably do. My assumption {which may be completely wrong, and probably is} has been that most people start with the pictures they want to showcase and build the page from there. I actually start with the paper I want to use {mostly} or layout design I'd like to try {sometimes} and think about the photos I want to use or the story I want to tell second.

So how does that work for me exactly?

When I do layouts, I scrap from kits I make ahead of time {see this blog post and this video for more info on how I make the kits}, so my process can go one of two ways:

1) making kits, choosing my story/pictures, and then selecting the kit I feel best matches the feel I'm going for with the story {more common}

OR

2) making kits, deciding on the way I want the layout to look, selecting the kit I feel best matches the layout I want to create, and then choosing my story/pictures based on the idea of the layout last {less common}

In both scenarios, I'd already matched patterned paper to cardstock to embellishments when I made the kit, so when I actually sit down to scrap I don't have to worry about that. I also do not try to match my paper to the colors in my photos ~ that way madness lies. Almost all pictures look good with almost all papers ~ you'd really be surprised how little clashing there is ~ so I choose kits/pictures based on mood or emotion. Do I want the layout to be bright and cheerful? Subtle and understated? Serious? Scary? What reaction am I going for with this project? That's what helps me choose the right kit for the right project.

Once I'm ready to create, I just spread the photos out on my desk and start start playing. I grab different colors of cardstock and different patterned papers and just move things around until it look right to me. I am pretty decisive, so I just go with what feels good to me. I don't worry too much about the finished product ~ I just keep adding elements or taking them away until I love what I have left. That's when I know I'm done & it's time to start gluing stuff down ~ when I love it.

Very occasionally I get stuck for an idea. That's when I turn to my "Inspiration Notebook" which I keep in a basket by my desk with my idea books. This is just a cheap composition book here I glue layouts, magazine articles, etc., that catch my eye & I think will work for a layout. But that's a topic for another post, I think!

How do you create? What's your process? I'd love to hear from you!

Making Page Kits!

Hi, everyone! Welcome back to Life on the {Scrap}beach!

Today I wanted to write a little about the page kits I use in my scrapping. Many of the questions I get about my videos have to deal with either page kits or my scrap process, and the two are somewhat interrelated.

I have prepared a little video of myself making a new kit which is available to view below or over on my YouTube channel.

At this point, I am scrapbooking almost exclusively from page kits I make myself. Now, I didn't wake up one morning and say to myself, "I think I'll make page kits!" Like everything else in this hobby, it has been a process for me.

My evolution into scrapping from page kits started with my first purchase of a monthly kit. I liked how easy it was to create projects when all the papers and cardstock and embellishments were coordinated, but I didn't really want to keep buying kits since I liked my supplies.

So I got the idea to create my own kits to incorporate my newer supplies with my older supplies. I started by getting some Cropper Hopper Page Planners and keeping just new things in them. Over time I started adding stuff from my stash to the new products and eventually I got in the habit of creating page kits from a combination of new and old product every time I made a new purchase.

When I find that I always skip a particular page kit and never reach for it anymore I take it apart ~ that means I'm sick of what's in there. Anything left in the kit gets returned to my stash and I now have an empty sleeve for a new kit.

I keep all my kits in one of these Large Rhombus Strage Totes from the Container Store:

It's the perfect size for the Cropper Hopper Page Planners. It holds a ton of them & they stay upright so I can easily flip through them to find the one I want.

Packing for a crop now is also a breeze. I justgrab some page kits and some photos and drop them in my storage tote. Then I add some stamps, some inks and a few other generic embellishments like my big punches and I'm ready to go!

Since I started scrapping almost exclusively from these kits, my scrap process has changed quite a bit. In the next three posts, I'm going to go over my scrapbook process for layouts, mini albums and cards. In these posts I'll go over how I find inspiration, how I utilize the kits, and what I do when I'm finished with a project. I hope you find the information helpful! Or, at the very least, not boring!

Finished "Time" Album

Hi, everyone! Welcome back to Life on the {Scrap}beach!

I just got back from vacation, so I'm going to make this quick. I did finish the "Time" mini album before my trip, so I don't have any video of it coming together, but I do have a video of the completed album to share:

Thanks so much for watching! The page kits video will be up as soon as I get myself back on track from my vacation {soon} and I'll also be posting all about my scrapping process, as well.

New Mini + Kit Club + Why Can't Tim Holtz and I Just Get Along?

Hi, everyone! Welcome back to Life on the {Scrap}beach!

For someone who is supposedly on vacation, I sure am posting a lot, huh? :D I really am on vacation, I promise, and not just slacking off and laying out beside my pool with a margarita pretending to be on vacation so I can ignore my blog.

Now I am trying to remember what the point of this post was supposed to be. I get side-tracked so easily! :D Oh, yes. There were three things I wanted to mention ~ new mini album, joined a kit club, Tim Holtz. Got it.

First, I am working on a new mini album. I've posted a slide show below, but I wanted to let you know a few things first: 1. it is not finished, and 2. the picture quality is not amazing {sorry!} because I snapped these shots with my iPhone, and 3. I did not make a video of it coming together, which 4. is not because I don't love you all very much but more because my cameras were already charged up and packed and I was too lazy to go and fish them out. Now, I promise that anything I do on the album after I get back from lying out by the pool vacationing at Disney World, I will put on video. And, at the very least, I will do a video of the completed project. In the meantme, I hope you will accept the humble offering of this slide show:

Right. That's covered, onto point number two: I joined a mini album trading kit club! Marion from A Piece of Craft invited me to join her mini album trading + kit club, "Girls Gone Scrappy" and I decided to join. The other girls are a blast to chat with online and everyone is super talented and fun. This month's kit was filled with stuff by Tim Holtz, and there is some great Basic Grey and K&Company kits coming up. I believe there may still some spots left, so email her at marion@apieceofcraft.com if you're interested or would like more information. I also included one of Marion's video below where she talks about the June kit, shows the mini album she made with the goodies & goes over what's included in the July kit:

Okay, so this month's kit was a ton of Tim Holtz stuff, and I have a confession to make: I cannot scrap like Tim Holtz. And I don't mean I'm not as good of a scapper as Tim Holtz, poor me. I mean I have some kind of acute mental block the prevents me from making things grungy and distressed. I love his projects, admire his art, gasp over the complex layers, wish I could do what he does, BUT I CANNOT RECREATE THE STYLE TO SAVE MY LIFE! Why Tim Holtz and I cannot get along is beyond me. Anyay, so I was determined to make an album with this kit that was grungy and distressed and just screamed "I have a Tim Holtz fixation!" and I think I did a pretty good job actually. Better than I have before at any rate.

So that's it ~ that's all I have to report today. Enjoy your weeks, I'm off to check out Animal Kingdom!

P.S. Happy birthday, Jill!

Visiting Mickey & Friends

Hi, everyone! Welcome back to Life on the {Scrap}beach!

I posted the final video in the Seaquarium mini album series yesterday. The album was so fun to create and everyone seemed to enjoy it so much ~ I'm so amazed at the response! I can let you know that this mini album is never going to end up as a giveaway on the blog. :D Sorry!

My husband and I are on going to be on our way to Walt Disney World in just a little bit for a vacation, so there won't be any new videos or blog posts for a few days. When I get back I'll be uploading the page kits video and doing a series of blog posts on my scrapping process as it relates to layouts, mini albums, cards, etc. I get quit a few questions about that & since my process relies heavily on my kits, I wanted to wait until after that video went live to start answering them.

I also have a ton of videos two edit: layouts, mini albums, cards, etc. So you can expect to see the video for the "Beach" mini album, the "Sweet Tea" layout {SO GIRLY!} and at least one Father's Day card {maybe even two!}. So there's plenty coming up after the break!

Thanks for stopping by & have a great week!

Seaquarium Mini Album, Part Three

Hi, everyone! Welcome back to Life on the {Scrap}beach!

So, I just uploaded the third video in my Seaquarium album series to my YouTube channel. This is more of the 5"x7" tabbed Grungebook that I embellished with the Cosmo Cricket Snorkel line. It's definitely one of my favorite creations!

I've been getting lots of questions about which products I use in my videos, as well as requests that I post a supply list for each video. I haven't done this in the past because most of the time the products I use in my videos are so old that you really can't get them anymore. Since this album uses mostly new{ish} stuff, I am going to include links for those who are interested in seeing what was used. I probably won't do this for every video going forward ~ just the videos where the supplies used are new{ish} and readily available in stores and/or online.

I will also always be happy to answer any questions on any of the videos, techniques or products used!

Supplies used: Most of these came from Two Peas in a Bucket
Corner Chomper Crop-A-Dile (We R Memory Keepers).
Precision File Set (Basic Grey)
Clever Lever Extra Giga Scalloped Circle Craft Punch (Marvy Uchida)
Clever Lever Mega Scalloped Circle Craft Punch (Marvy Uchida)
5"x7" Tabbed Grungeboard Book (Advantus)
Snorkel Paper Crafting Kit (Cosmo Cricket)
Snorkel Ready Set Chip (Cosmo Cricket)
Snorkel Ribbon (Cosmo Cricket)
Background Papers Collection (Scenic Route Paper Co.)
Grafton Beach Chipboard (Scenic Route Paper Co.)
Grafton Label Stickers (Scenic Route Paper Co.)

Thanks for watching & I hope you enjoyed it!
