LAYOUT WEEK 2013, DAY ONE: The Day I Met You, 12"x12" Layout

I have a new layout and video to share with you today!
This one features goodies from the Hip 2b Square Scrapbooking June 2013 Hip Kit + Add-Ons.

Here's a look at the supplies that Hip 2b Square sent to me to use in this video:
June 2013 Main Kit

June 2013 Embellishment Kit

June 2013 Paper Kit

June 2013 Cardstock Kit

June 2013 Color Kit

June 2013 Stamp Kit

Below is a video showing all the kit contents in more detail. You can watch it here or over on YouTube.

For today's layout, I created this sketch:

Lots of fun layers on this one!

Here are some photos of the finished layout:

I used the Judikins "Sticky Stuff" embossing powder and the American Crafts WOW! glitter from the color kit to create the broad glittered stripes in the background.

The first time I've ever used any of the flair buttons I keep buying. ;) I embossed the butterflies from the Stamp Kit with white powder to create these butterfly embellishments. I love how they turned out!

An enamel dot is the perfect finishing touch on the butterfly's body! I used a punch from American Crafts and a label from Echo Park to dress up this corner. Look how pretty the glitter is behind that open scallop!

These canvas frames from Maggie Holmes are so fun to use.  I sprayed some wood veneer banners from Studio Calico that were in the Embellishment Kit with the Heidi Swapp Color Shine from the Color Kit. It makes a fun title with lots of movement.

I filmed this layout coming together for my YouTube channel. You can watch the video below, or click this link to watch it over on YouTube: The Day I Met You.

Cicadas: A Love Story

As I type this blog post, the hum of the cicadas outside my window is so loud it is impossible to fully block out without some loud music.

Yesterday, Mr. Lifeguard went to Starbucks to get us breakfast and a giant cicada hitched a ride inside the house on his collar. He hung on quietly until Alan was putting the coffees on the counter and then he started buzzing his wings like a helicopter and nearly gave the poor guy a heart attack.

They swarm around you when you walk outside. Your car grill is full of them when you get home. They're loud, and they're gross and they're already over seventeen years old.

Check out this video by Samuel Orr that shows their amazing lifespan. He's currently working on a one hour documentary on these little guys, which you can invest in via kickstarter if you like what you see below.

Have a GREAT Wednesday, and I hope you enjoyed the video!

"Picture This!" Album Poll

I was recently contacted by AccuCut regarding the camera die. As I explained on the show, there had been a manufacturing problem with the die and they were unable to replace mine.

Recently, they let me know that they had been working on the die's design in house and had come up with an alternative die. Their in-house designers are on the fence about how it turned out and they asked if I would be willing to test it myself. I agreed and they are sending me the revised die.

Assuming that this die is suitable for mass production (and please bear in mind that it might not be, in which case we will continue with the picture frame album), would you like to switch from the picture frame album to the camera album for the upcoming "Picture This!" class?

Please check one of the answers in the poll below so I can get an idea of how you guys feel about the class!

Your input is very much appreciated!

Sincerely,

Kathryn

Update on Carol's Sister

I spoke with Carol of Scrapadabadoo this evening, and I have an update on her sister's condition for you. As you may know, Carol's sister suffered a very serious heart attack last week and did not show any brain activity following the arrest. She was put into a hypothermic state to preserve her brain function while her organs recovered.

Early yesterday morning they started letting her body temperature rise and she did wake up. She is able to blink, smile and turn her head, as well as to respond to basic questions about how she feels (if she hot, cold, in pain, etc.). The doctor's are pleased with her progress so far, but say they need to wait until she is off the ventilator to do a full assessment.

Her heart is clear and she is able to maintain her own blood pressure.

She has a touch of pneumonia, but that is improving with treatment.

Carol and her family appreciate your thoughts and prayers very much and she has told me they all feel them while they are with her sister in the hospital.

Carol will be posting updates on her sister's condition to Facebook. You can friend her here for more information: Carol Hester on Facebook.

If you have an order pending from Scrapadabadoo, there are people working while Carol is away to fulfill your orders. There may be a delay of 1-2 days beyond their usual fast shipping, but they are working very hard to get your products packed and on their way to you.

If you have any questions about your order, please contact Scrapadabadoo directly: Contact Scrapadabadoo.

NEW CLASS + SHOP ITEM: Picture This Album

We're getting ready to start a new USTREAM album series this June: a photography centered album to house all your favorite photos using the Bo Bunny "Mama Razzi 2" collection.
I am really excited about this project and the Bo Bunny collection - I'm looking forward to chronicling how photography and the way we take pictures has changed over the years & my own personal evolution with photography.
Here is a picture of the album I'll be using:

This approx. 7"x9" chipboard + wood grain album is available in my shop now!
When you purchase the album, you will get three sheets of picture frame style extra heavy chipboard and three sheets of picture frame styled wood grain paper. In the photo above, you can see how I sprayed the wood grain with Heidi Swapp Color Shine to change the color to match the paper collection. I also cut the pages in half so we'll be making a smaller album that looks like a picture frame when opened. I love it!

Since the album is cut from plain chipboard and white cardstock, you'll still be able to play along if the Bo Bunny papers are not to your taste. The neutral colors will go with any paper collection you'd like to use!

Click here for a more in depth discussion of the "Picture This!" album and a supply list: Picture This!

On today's USTREAM shows, we'll be going over the supplies for the upcoming project above, as well as making a viewer project request: the project planner Leisa Herbst designed as a gift for each of us at CHA!

I created some inserts for the planner:

In the afternoon class, we'll be going over in detail the supplies for the "Picture This!" album, as well as supplies for our upcoming masculine/Father's Day projects. Then we'll be getting to work on the project planner, so gather some cardstock and your favorite paper collection and join us!

n the evening class, we'll be completing the planner + doing some decorating.

Classes are this afternoon from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM Eastern USA time and then again this evening from 9:00 PM to 11:00 PM Eastern USA time.

All classes and their recordings will be over on my USTREAM channel: Kathryn Scraps!

See you there!

NEW VIDEO: What Does Desdichaedo Mean?

I have a new layout and video to share with you today!
This one features papers from Park Bench collection by Fancy Pants Designs:

There was a challenge kicking around YouTube to explain the meaning behind your YouTube user id. Since that's a question I get asked from time to time, I decided to create a layout explaining some of the meaning behind it.

I wanted to play with layering circles on this layout - I love the movement it gives!

This sticker from My Mind's Eye was the perfect accent for this layout. Not only I am explaining the story behind my name, but the origins of the name are in a novel. Love the extra meaning it gives. Plus that yellow looks gorgeous over that blue doily.

I used Nestabilities to cut these circles from the papers in the collection.

I used circles throughout this layout to soften all the hard edges from the layers of patterned paper. This piece was my favorite - I love the black over the gold glitter (Martha Stewart).

That blue button is covering up a tear in the paper - opportunities for embellishment are everywhere!

I used a roller date stamp to add a date to this label from Jillibean Soup. I didn't actually have one that went back to 1982, but with some creative masking, I was able to make this one work just fine.

I love the layers of stickers here - just the right touch!

My title was a combination of Mini Market stickers by October Afternoon and DIY Thickers by American Crafts. Using all Thickers for such a long title would have been too much, but the combination of stickers keeps it from being overwhelming.

I used the Martha Stewart glitter to make my Thickers sparkle!

I filmed this layout coming together for my YouTube channel. You can watch the video below, or click this link to watch it over on YouTube: What Does Desdichaedo Mean?

Today's Thursday, so we have USTREAM starting at 2:00 PM Eastern USA time and again at 9:00 PM Eastern USA time. Join me on my USTREAM channel for fun chatting and lots of scrapbooking!

May Layout Week on USTREAM!

Thank you for participating in May Layout Week on my USTREAM channel yesterday! Chat was so much fun yesterday and we got two beautiful layouts created.

The first layout used the Bo Bunny Snow Play collection. This was the fifth installment in a series of classes that started in January showing how you can use seasonal papers all year in non-seasonal ways.

I customized the paper with inks and embossing folders so it matched my photos perfectly!

To see how this layout was made, click here for the USTREAM recording: May Layout, Bo Bunny Version.

The second layout used the Pink Paislee Hope Chest collection. Each month we do two layouts - one with the seasonal paper and the other with a paper that is not themed.

I used the WRMK Envelope Punch Board to make these envelopes.

To see how this layout was made, click here for the USTREAM recording: Part One and Part Two.

Thanks so much for joining me! Our next Layout Week will be on Thursday, June 6, 2013!
