Completed "Flora & Fauna" PBA + Upcoming UStream Project

Hi, everyone! I have a long post today with lots of links and info, so please get a cup of coffee, a bottle of NoDoz & a couple toothpicks for your eyelids.

First, I finished the Flora & Fauna Paper Bag Album.

I completed my "Flora & Fauna" paper bag album ~ photos placed, journaling written, 100% totally DONE! I have been working on it during my regular Thursday UStream shows. This is a paper bag album based on a design by Kathy Orta with some modifications by me.

I have uploaded a video overview of the album over on my YouTube channel for you to see with the completed album. You can watch the video below, or over on YouTube by clicking this link: Completed "Flora & Fauna" Paper Bag Album.

I ended up tweaking the binding a little. I originally used too much canvas so I had to shorten it. After I did so, I used a row of eyelets to attach the two pieces of canvas left to each other. Then I added another row of eyelets on the other side of the spine, laced the holes with chain & hung charms from the chains. Here's a pic of the final spine:

I think it looks awesome this way! So glad I made the canvas too long, even if it was a colossal pain in the rear to get it too look like this.

To see how to assemble the bags for this album, check out this video: Album Assembly.

For more detail on the supplies used in this album, check out this video: Album Preparations.

Second, here's all the details on my upcoming UStream "Make Ahead Travel Journal" series. You could also use this same set of instructions to make your own journal, similar to the SMASH or Ditto books that are so popular right now. Don't know what a SMASH Book is? Check out this video: SMASH.

Anyways, you probably saw a little overview of the travel album project if you watched the above video all the way to the end. For a longer explanation of the "Make Ahead Travel Journal", check out this UStream recording: Make Ahead Travel Journal Info.

To download and print the free graph and ledger paper for the travel journal {or Mash Book} mentioned in the recordings, check out this site: Free Printable Lined Papers.

Now that you know what we're doing, here's what you'll need to gather together if you want to work along with me on Thursday:

1. 25-50 8.5"x11" pieces of patterned paper. I'll be using the DCWV "Tradewinds" stack because mine is travel themed, but you can use whatever paper you have in your stash. Just use something that is inspiring to you!

2. Your favorite stamps. I'm going to gather together all my stamps that have to do with journey, discovery, travel, etc. Think about what you want your book to be about & choose stamps that will prompt you to write and collect.

3. File folders. We're going to be using these to make a couple of larger pockets for the inside covers to hold larger pieces of memorabilia & ephemera.

4. Shipping tags. We'll be using one of these to make an awesome bookmark for your journal. It stays put when you want it to, but can be removed when you're ready to move to a fresh page.

5. Pockets. If you don't have any pockets, don't worry ~ I'll show you how to make your own during the UStream Series.

6. Envelopes. Any kind of envelopes, all different sizes. I'll also show you how to make custom envelopes as well.

7. Ribbon for a pen holder. Elastic ribbon is best, but any ribbon will work.

8. 2 sheets of heavy chipboard & 2 sheets of lightweight chipboard for the covers.

9. Anything else that strikes your fancy. This is going to be a fun, eclectic book with all kinds of interactive elements.

I will be starting the video series during my UStream show this coming Thursday. I am live every Thursday from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and again from 9:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. on my UStream Channel: Live on the {Scrap}Beach.

All times are Eastern USA {Miami/New York}. To convert to your time zone, click here: Time Zone Converter.

Lastly, my Big Shot Pro is coming on Wednesday!!!

I know we're all excited to start our Travel Journals/Mash Books, but I will definitely start of Thursday with an overview of the new machine. I'm also scheduled to get the dies for the Pink Paislee "Hometown Summer" album this Wednesday, so I'll be able to show you those as well.

Hope to see you there!

~Kathryn :D

  2. ...Love this idea, it's as if you are inside my head...using patterned paper and printing on the other side is my favorite double duty!!! Thank you for the free printing site, it is full of possibilities ...my question Kathryn, is what type of paper should I gather to make the pockets with? cardstock? I am so excited to make this one with you ...enjoy your BIG SHOT...monica

  4. So glad you were able to catch the recording, Christina! I was very pleased with how the binding turned out in the end, although I was not happy with it at first. I'm kind of glad I messed up the first time, though, because the end result of having to fix it turned out so great! Anyways, the Mash Book should be pretty darn awesome. It's going to be a blast to put together! I even put one of my homemade notebooks in the scrap room so I can show you what a final version might look like.

Hiya, Monica! I am probably going to be making the pockets of of file folders, actually. You definitely want something that will be pretty sturdy as you stuff things into it. If not file folders, then a heavier cardstock would be good.

I am SO excited about the Big Shot Pro, Margaret Ann! I already know I am going to be in love with it & I haven't even gotten it yet. :D I am going to use my regular BS plates whenever I can, too. I think it will also just be easier to handle, too. Thanks so much for your sweet comments about my work!

  5. Kathryn,
This travel journal is just what I need to put in all of the bits & pieces for my upcoming transatlantic cruise. I do have the Tradewinds paper so I'll be prepping this weekend. Unfortunately - I'll have to catch everything in recordings. Your stream is prime employee time ;-) Thanks so much - Kim
