Seaquarium Mini Album, Part One

Hi, everyone! Welcome back to Life on the {Scrap}beach!

I know you were all expecting this next video to be about page kits, but since you liked the mini album so much yesterday, I decideto bump my Seaquarium Mini Album up in the queue. So, I just uploaded the first video to my YouTube channel. This is a 5"x7" tabbed Grungebook that I embellished with the Cosmo Cricket Snorkel line, and I have to say that I am very proud of this little book. It's definitely one of my favorite creations! Normally by the time I finish a mini album, I am a little bit sick of it, but I can't stop looking through this little book ~ it's just been so much fun!

I've been getting lots of questions about which products I use in my videos. While I'm more than happy to answer them, most of the time the products I use in my videos are so old that you really can't get them anymore. However, this album uses mostly new stuff, so I am going to include links for those who are interested in seeing what was used. I probably won't do this for every video going forward ~ just the videos where the supplies used are new{ish} and readily available in stores and online. I will also always be happy to answer any questions on any of the videos, techniques or products used!

Supplies used: Most of these came from Two Peas in a Bucket
Corner Chomper Crop-A-Dile (We R Memory Keepers). I am in love with this tool, by the way! It is so great for me because I have very weak thumbs ~ I've broken both of them, and neither of them healed quite right ~ so I really struggle with my corner rounders sometimes. Squeezing with my whole hand to round corners is so much easier! Love it!
Precision File Set (Basic Grey)
5"x7" Tabbed Grungeboard Book (Advantus)
Alphas Grungeboard (Advantus)
Seafoam 2Oz Scrapbook Paint (Making Memories)
Lemon 2Oz Scrapbook Paint (Making Memories)
Melt Art Ultra Thick Embossing Enamel in Clear and in White (Ranger Industries)

Thanks for watching ~ I hope you enjoyed it!

  1. Great book!! Love the layered UTEE look, and I'm glad you've figured out how to use different finished grungeboard letters. I never have enough of the right letter in what I need, thanks for the $ saving tip.
I read a blog that showed putting all of your mini-albums in a basket in the living area to encourage friends and family to pick them up and take a gander - I'm off to see if I can find a basket that I can use for this idea, "shopping" in the garage!!
    Have a happy, healthy day.
    Later,

  2. I like the idea of a mini album basket ~ that's a good one! I usually set a few out and around {like on coffee tables} when friends or family who might be interested are visiting. I try to choose albums that would be relevant to the people who would be looking through them.

    Thanks for everything, Jill!

  3. Can't wait for the rest of your installments on this mini, Kathryn.

Immediately, I picked up a tip from you - painting the chipboard cover with white first before applying one's desired color. I've often painted chipboard alphas and shapes, and stopped doing it because I was getting disappointed with the results. The paint looked great on my tray but looked oddly different once on the chipboard. So, white first from now on. I wonder why manufacturers don't just make white chipboard?

You're just a veritable fountain of tips--I wonder how many more I'll pick up in this video series? Thanks as always; you do a great job with your videos!

P.S. Just ordered the Binderie per your advice. I do see now how I will need it for my planned minis since they'll definitely be much thicker than 1". The only 2 I've done thus far were fatter than 2"!

But I still want the Zutter (cheeky AND greedy) for thinner ones. I think I'll drop some hints to the family when I get home tonight. Hmmm.

  4. Hi, Liz!

    I am excited to see you are getting a Binderie. I want one but I have a birthday coming up and so I must be patient about these things. {so hard, though}

I have three colors of chipboard i my scrap area right now: "white", black and raw/kraft. I put "white" in quotes because it is just raw chipboard covered on one side with a single layer of white paper, so it's not really any better/more useful than raw & I probably won't get it again. The color I like the most is actually black since it is the most finished looking of the three, but it doesn't work for all projects.

Priming chipboard with white paint before painting with a color is actually a huge time saver for me. I can usually get the color I want with one coat of white paint and one coat of colored paint. Before I was using layer after layer of color trying to get it to look like the color in the bottle. I just buy the cheapest wite acrylic paint the craft store has & use that under my nicer, thicker paints for scrapbooking.

I'm glad you are picking up some good tips and tricks & I hope your family pays attention to the hints you will be dropping! :D

  9. Kathryn, wonderful video. I am so looking forward to this album as you will be using the Snorkel line of papers, I love them!!! It will be fun to see the album with pictures in it as well. Thanks for all the helpful tips - you always make everything look so easy and doable. Would the UTEE work on chipboard the same way as it did on your cover? Looking forward to the next installment already! Nancy

  10. Hi, Nancy! UTEE will work just fine on regular chipboard, as will other types of embossing powder. Thanks so much for watching & leaving such nice comments!

  11. Kathryn,
I always learn so much by going back and reading the comments and discussions you have with your followers. (TFS)
I wanted to ask Lizacreates if she would keep us all posted on how she likes her Binderie, and yeah, don't you love birthdays!
I have been experiementing with covering patterned chipboard using pigment ink, if you cover it with clear embossing powder you see shadows of its former self. If you cover it with an opaque obviously it will come out solid. It's a great tip when you find it on sale and you don't like the design or color you can always make it shiny black yourself. I also got turned on to the white Thickers by watching you and I love "accenting" those with stickles and markers.

  12. Sorry, I didn't point out that to get the shadowed effect you use colored pigment ink and then clear embossing powder.

  13. Jill, that is a great point about chipboard. If you see a shape or alpha you like & it's a great price, but you don't really like the color or pattern, you can always change the color with embossing powder! Black is the quickest transformation because you usually only need one coat, but I have covered dark colors with white as well ~ it just took more than one coat of powder.

I really like your idea of covering patterned chipboard with pigment ink and then clear embossing powder for shapes/alphas where you like the pattern but maybe not the color ~ good idea!

Do you believe that I own not even one bottle of stickles! Tim Holtz would be so ashamed...:D

  14. They are sooooo cool, somehow they have a "self leveling" agent in them so you dont get the glitter glue bumps that we all hated from the olden days....lol

  15. I am tempted by Stickles, but I feel like that's one of those things that could quickly get out of control & become a sick, sick obsession! :D

Right now I use regular glitter with Glossy Accents to make a glitter glue look, but I may jump on the Stickles band wagon some day!
