New Mini in the Works

Hi, everyone! Welcome back to Life on the {Scrap}beach!

I just finished putting together a new little mini. I filmed video of this mini coming together, but the videos won't be ready for posting for a while, so I thought I'd show you a little slide show in the meantime!

I hope you enjoyed it & thanks for watching!

  9. That looks cool, Kathryn...will be waiting patiently for the video. I actually used that same line of paper & embellies for my parents' cruise about a year ago, and have always liked the "beachy" designs and colors.

OK, I've made up my mind-there's no way I can make mini books without a crop-a-dile or a binderie. Who am I kidding? So, off to price both to see which is a better value for me.

    Thanks!

  10. Hi, Liz! Thanks so much ~ I'm glad you enjoyed he album! I do love these papers because of the great texture and beachy colors. I am definitely a fan of the blues, greens and sandy browns. Love it all!

I am intrigued by the & Gypsies Binderie because I do have some {minor} hand problems and after a while the Crop-A-Dile can be a little much more me. It's usually only a problem toward the end of a marathon scrap session, but I also like the idea of covering my chipboard with paper and then punching the holes only once. That would be nice!

The Crop-A-Dile is really great and versatile, though, and I already have it so I will just stick with it I guess. Although, I was in Office Max yesterday looking for replacement X-Acto blades and coin envelopes for a mini album idea {they had neither} and I saw a heavy duty hole puncher in the stapler/hole puncher aisle that looked similar to the binderie. I almost got it, but decided to think about whether I really needed it some more before I allowed it space in my scrap room.

Good luck with whatever you decide & have fun making our minis!

  11. Oh gosh, know what you mean. I have a very limited scrapping space and have to be very choosy about supplies, tools, etc. Not to mention the money issue! I'm probably the only scrapper without a die cutting machine 'cuz I can't justify the expense and space. I'm still so-o-o much into old-fashioned scissors and craft knives (LOL), the same basic tools I've been using for over three decades of crafting! (yup, you can call me el cheapo)

So glad you mentioned the hand problem! Didn't even think about that. I have arthritis in my right hand, not crippling but can be painful. Zutter BIA and Binderie then would be my 2 choices.

  12. Liz, I totally agree with what you posted. If something is coming into my scraproom to take up permenant residence, it needs to pull its own weight to justify both the space to house it and the expense to purchase it. Which is why I have been spending who knows how long mulling over this diecut machine question!

If you are tring to choose between the Zutter BIA and the 7Gypsies Binderie for binding your mini books, I would probably recommend the Binderie, even though I don't have one myself.

I do have the Zutter BIA, and while I love it and think it is exceedingly well crafted, it would not give you as much flexibiliy as the 7Gypsies Binderie. With the BIA, you have no choice but to cut all those holes, every time. Sometimes I want a mini book to have just two rings & so it is no good for that. Also, the o-wires only go up to 1.25" in diameter, so it limits how many pages you can put into your book as well {the total height of your stack of pages needs to be 0.25" less than the size o-wire you use, making 1" the maximum thickness of any book bound with the BIA}. This is not such a big deal if you are using chipboard covers and cardstock pages, but becomes problematic if you are using chipboard pages. I just finished a mini book {Seaquarium, videos coming next week} that needed 3" rings in the end to bind it properly.

Also, binder rings are much easier to get than o-wires and are available in a wider varety of sizes. You can get all sizes of rings at pretty much any office supply store {cheap!}. Whereas most office supply stores do not sell o-wires {checked last night at our Office Max and they only had comb bindings ~ my trip last night to Office Max was pretty much a bust all around!}.

All that being said, I do have a Zutter BIA and I love it for certain projects. However, if I did not have a Zutter BIA already and did not have a Crop-A-Dile either, I would definitely choose a Binderie over a BIA now. I feel like you could probably use the Binderie pretty easily to punch just one hole & that would make it almost as useful as the Crop-A-Dile.

    Just my $2.00! {Adjusted for inflation, of course :D}

  18. No, Genny, you will just have to wait and be patient! :D I haven't even edited the videos {haven't even looked at them yet}, so it is going to be a couple weeks at least. In the meantime, though, I have videos of another mini album coming together that are pretty much ready to go, so that series will be starting soon! I hope that will tide you over until this one is ready!

  21. Hi, Jill! You are addicted to mini books!? Well, you didn't get that from me because, as we all know, I rarely do mini books! :D I hope you have fun & I'm glad the info in the comments here was helpful! Thanks so much for your comments on my "beach" mini ~ I do try to keep my themese fairly subtle, so I'm glad to see that I was successful!

  22. Great slide show Kathryn! What papers are you using for this mini album? I love the beach feel as I live on an island so water is part of my life! Another great scrapping project from you to look forward to. Thanks so much!

  23. These papers are from Heidi Grace/Fiskars line "Beyond the Sea" line which I got from Two Peas in a Bucket. It's actually on sale from them right now for 30% off. You can see it here.
