G45 "Nutcracker Sweet" Boxed Set Album

Hi, everyone!

Just wanted to get a quick post out with the photos from my finished "Boxed Set" albums from the USTREAM class series.

In a recent USTREAM class series, I showed step-by-step how to create the storage box and books from using the Graphic 45 "Nutcracker Sweet" collection. The class was offered online beginning Thursday, October 4th, and you can see a recording of the first class here: Boxed Set Album. Below are some pictures of the completed Boxed Set from the class series. It would make a wonderful Christmas gift for a friend, or an album to hold all your years of Christmas photos.

 

 

Holding 31 4"x6" photos easily, this trio of albums looks like a set of hardbound books in a commemorative storage box. The three albums and the storage box are made entirely from paper and chipboard. The instruction manual details building and covering the box, as well as creating the albums. Photos of sample decorated pages and a supply list are also included in the manual. (Note: the photos in the manual use the Graphic 45 A Ladies' Diary papers, not Nutcracker Sweet)

This 66 page manual costs $18.49 and includes over 200 color photos illustrating the steps needed to complete the album. The manual is available in my shop: Shop.

NEW VIDEO: Moc Bai - Bavet, 12"x12" Layout

Happy Friday, everyone!

Another layout for my sister's travel album! I am trying to kill this paper pad, but man it is hard. This is my fourth layout with this pad so far & I can't even see a dent. Now I realize why my paper stash always grows, no matter how long of a break I take from shopping - it seems like one paper pad will make like 50 layouts! Craziness!

In this case, it will be a good thing that paper pads last so long. All the travel layouts in this album will look cohesive, despite being from all over the world.

This 12"x12" layout is about the Moc Bai - Bavet International Border Crossing. This is the border crossing between Vietnam and Cambodia that is closest to Ho Chi Minh City and Phnom Penh. For this layout, I printed the journaling on patterned paper and layered lots of cut-out tags from the collection together for a fun look.

Bushel Box Project Starts TODAY!

Hi, everyone!

Today we are starting a new USTREAM series! For my fall project, I have designed a "bushel box" which holds up to an 8"x8" album (either bound or with freestanding pages you can flip through).

Created entirely by you from chipboard and cardstock, this crate, inspired by vintage bushel boxes, holds up to an 8"x8" album or pretty much anything else you can imagine -- pot pourri, tea towels, soaps, candles, etc! Once you understand how the crate comes together, you'll be able to create boxes in this style of any size or shape.

Because this project had an above average amount of measurements, I have written a mini instruction manual for the box. This "mini" instruction manual details building and covering the bushel box only. While it is not actually "mini" in terms of content (it is just as long as the Convertible Album manual), I am calling it "mini" because it does not include instructions on what goes inside. This manual does not cover decorating the bushel box or the album that goes inside, but all of that will be covered in the USTREAM series that starts today.

My album will be an 8"x8" album done in a fall theme, but you can choose any theme you like! I'll be using the Bo Bunny "Apple Cider" collection on this project. The class will be offered online starting today during Euro Chat at 2:00 PM Eastern USA time on my USTREAM channel.

The USTREAM shows where we build and decorate the bushel box, and the album that goes inside it, will be recorded for later viewing.

NEW MANUAL: Bushel Box Mini Manual

Starburst Layout Challenge!

Hi, everyone!

I've been reading a lot on the message boards these days from people who are collecting 6"x6" pads but not using them. I am a huge offender in this area, as well. In fact, I recently told myself I wasn't allowed to buy any more 6"x6" pads unless I actually started using them up.

With that in mind, I created the below layout with 6"x6" paper pads in mind. I arranged the papers in a sunburst pattern so that it looks like the rays are coming from the photos. This layout design was so popular, that viewers were anxious to try it. To add a little encouragement, I have decided to turn this layout into inspiration for a Starburst Layout Challenge!

NEW VIDEO: 6"x6" Paper Challenge Layout

Hi, everyone!

I created another layout last night. This one is a 12"x12" layout that uses only the Pink Paislee "Prairie Hill" papers in the 6"x6" size. The only 12"x12" used was cardstock. I've been reading a lot on the message boards these days from people who are collecting these pads but not using them. I am a huge offender in this area, as well. I had an idea for a layout in my head, but I wasn't 100% sure it would work, so I used the three photos left over from my last layout to experiment with. So this layout also features photos from my sister's trip to the Lord of the Rings "Hobbiton" set in New Zealand. I arranged the papers in a sunburst pattern so that it looks like the rays are coming from the photos.

The layout was actually pretty simple. It's just a little time consuming to piece the sunray together. I watched Netflix while I was doing it, so I caught up on some of what's been happening in Mystic Falls, although I am still way behind in this series. Not sure if I care too much what happens to any of these characters, but it's a good show to watch while I'm crafting since I am only half paying attention anyway.

Christmas Card: Impression Obsession Angel

Hi, everyone!

I hope you all enjoyed your long weekends (and turkey, if you had some)!

Last night we had Christmas Card Camp over on my USTREAM channel. We worked with the Impression Obsession "Angel" stamp, which is available in my shop: Kathryn's Shop.

Here's how she turned out! I absolutely LOVED how much fun it was to create this card. The stamp is so much fun to color. You can click the photo below to make it large and see more details.

I started with a piece of white cardstock. Then I colored it with Ranger Distress Stain in the color "Scattered Straw" to make it a golden color. Next I sprayed it with a yellow Glimmer Mist so it would sparkle. After it was dry, I stamped the star background with Ranger's Big & Bossy embossing ink, and embopssed it with fine clear powder.

The clear embossing powder created a resist for the next steps. I inked the entire card with Ranger Distress Ink in "Weathered Wood" to take away the bright yellow color and cool it down. Next I covered it with Ranger Distress Ink in the "Dusty Concord" color to get the deep purple background. The stars remain yellow because of the resist affect of the clear embossing.

Next I used Ranger Archival ink in the "Coffee" color to stamp the image on cold press watercolor paper. I used Ranger Distress stains and a water brush to give her that painted look. Here are the colors I used:

Hair:
Frayed Burlap shaded with Vintage Photo

Halo, Wings, Dress Trim:
Scattered Straw shaded with Wild Honey

Dress:
Peeled Paint shaded with Forest Moss

Shoes:
Forest Moss

Skin:
Equal parts Antique Linen and Spun Sugar

Cheeks:
Tattered Rose

Lips:
Tattered Rose mixed with a little Fired Brick

Trumpet:
Scattered Straw shaded with Wild Honey and Fired Brick

After the image was painted, I cut it out and used dimensional adhesive to adhere it to the star background. I added that to a green card base that matched her dress. Once everything was glued down, I accented the image with Ranger Liquid Pearls in the "Buttercup" color and Ranger Stickles in the "Gold" color.

NEW VIDEO: Hobbiton, 12"x24" Layout

Hi, everyone!

First of all, a very happy Thanksgiving to all our friends to the north! I hope you all have a wonderful weekend with friends, family and super moist turkey! :)

I created another layout over the weekend. This one is a 12"x24" double layout, featuring pictures from my sister's trip to the Lord of the Rings "Hobbiton" set in New Zealand. She had lots of beautiful photos from that excursion, so I printed 14 of them out in a variety of sizes (I only used 11 in the end). I laid the photos out in a collage, which is a little out of my comfort zone, but I like how it looks. Using mainly photos as background paper really saves on supplies, too!

The real challenge with this layout was the number and sheer size of some of the photos! It was a lot, even for a double page layout. It was difficult to put the photos down first and then decorate around them. Usually I choose my photos, decide on a layout & then build a background to highlight the photos. This was a bit backwards for me, but it was a nice challenge.

CORRECTION: "Boxed Set" Manual

Hi, everyone!

Just a quick post with a correction to the Box Set Manual. The correction is on page 40 of the manual and pertains to steps 15 and 16.

The manual currently reads:

15. Adhere one of the flaps to the front cover, living the edge of the flap up with the edge of the spine cover as shown below:

16. Adhere the remaining flap to the back cover, lining the edge of the flap up with the spine cover as before.

The manual should read:

15. Adhere the free flap of the 2"x6 1/2" cardstock piece to the front cover, lining the edge of the flap up with the edge of the spine cover as shown below:

16. Adhere the free flap of the 5 1/5"x6 1/2" cardstock piece to the back cover, lining the edge of the flap up 1/8" short of the edge of the spine cover.

Today we are starting an exciting, new USTREAM series! I will be doing special classes to teach the "Boxed Set" album technique (the three books in a box). In this class series, we'll create the storage box and books from scratch. Classes will be recorded, so they can be viewed at any time, as well as live.

NEW VIDEO: Dogs of Vietnam, 12"x12"

Hi, everyone!

So, I had such a hard time with my last layout, that I decided I should jump right back on the horse and keep practicing. I decided to scrap another layout last night, using photos from my sister's trip to Vietnam. I used the same Michael's paper pad from the Recollections brand (I think it's called "Today, Tomorrow, Forever").

It took me a lot less time to get this "quick" layout done than it took me to get my last "quick" layout done (although neither of them was exactly "quick" to put together). I still haven't 100% remembered how to scrapbook, so I need to keep working on these layouts until things click again! :D

Below are pictures of the completed layout. Sorry for the glare, but once this type of layout is in the page protector, it can't be removed! You'll see why in the video.

 

 

My challenge to myself with this layout was not to use any embellishments ~ just patterned paper ~ and to still create and interesting and engaging layout. Whether or not you think I met this goal, probably has a lot to do with whether or not you consider Thickers an embellishment or not! :D I suppose if I wanted to be a complete purist about it, I could have diecut my title with patterned paper or cardstock.
