Create Your Own Chipboard Word Book + Video

Hi, everyone! Welcome back to Life on the {Scrap}beach!

As you all know, I have finally finished my husband's half marathon album. {Yay!} The half marathon album is actually a custom word book that spells "half" which I created from raw chipboard and grungeboard letters. You'll see this in the video, but essentially what I did was trace around the large grungeboard letters and create my own wordbook that way.

If you don't have grungeboard at home and would like to try this project, you can print out enlargements of a font from your computer. That way you can customize your projects even more ~ custom font AND custom size!

I just uploaded the first video in my new "Half Marathon" series over on my YouTube Channel. This album may have een a bear, but the concept is still good & I will probably use it again.

Thanks for watching & I hope you enjoyed it!

  2. I love the ideas you have for making your own word books. How exactly did you know where to place each of the letters after the first one? I was a little confused about that in the video (it takes nothing to get me mixed up!!!!!) I am looking forward to the rest of this book as I have always wanted to do a word book and I just love the paper you are using. Thank you so much for sharing. Nancy

  3. What a great idea, I can see how it tripped you up a bit. What a cool idea. can't wait for the rest of the videos.

  4. Hi, Steff! It was quite a bit of work, but it turned out nice in the end!

Nancy, after I placed the first lette, I lay the first piece of chipboard over the second piece of chipboard. Then I used a ruler and a white gel pen to draw a line on the second piece of chipboard where the first piece of chipboard left off. Then I used that line to place the second letter. Does that make sense? Let me know if it doesn't! :D Thanks for watching & I'm glad you enjoyed it!

Thanks, ddbug! Yes, it was so much work with the scissors, the craft knife, etc. I really thought I was going to lose it, but I loved how it turned out in the end!

  10. Hi Kathryn,

Happy Fourth of July! I missed this yesterday as we were all feeding our faces at the Taste of Chicago festival where over 50 restaurateurs have taste booths. I feed my soul with scrapping, but can't forget to feed the body, too. LOVE summer!

This is truly creative (not to mention frugal). I did notice that detailed cutting seems to be less of a challenge when done on a glass mat. I don't have one of those huge ones, though. Are they horribly pricey? This is shaping (OK, it's a puny pun) up to be a really fun album. Hmmm...giving me some ideas already. Your videos are always, always inspiring.

Btw, when I get my act together I'll be posting the pics of my completed minis at 2 Peas. These are the ones where I've used many of your techniques that I've picked up. Thanks for all that you do!

  11. Hi, everyone! Happy Independence Day! I have some company here, so my response to comments will be a little spotty the next few days, but I am thinking of you all! :D

Cindy, I appreciate your kind comments on my videos. The chipboard brand is "Paper Accents" and it is the "EXtra Heavy" weight. I got mine online from Create for Less.

Hi, Hope! Thank you SO MUCH, that's sweet of you to say! :D The packing tape technique works really well for chipboard you're going to b covering with paper ~ very sturdy!

Thanks, Maritza! I used my Tonic serrated blade detail scissors for all the parts of the letters I could reach and a craft knife for the parts that I couldn't. It took a while, but it turned out well in the end!

Thank you, Stephanie, I really appreciate it! I'm so glad you enjoyed the video. The next part in the video series should be up beginning of next week.

Marthe, I'm so glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment!

Howdy, Liz! Sounds like you had fun yesterday! I have two friends that live in the Chicago area ~ one in Chicago itself and the other in Naperville. I'll have to ask them if they took time to check it out.

Any craft knife work is easier when done on a glass mat than a self-healing mat. The mat I have {13"x13" total with a 12"x12" grid} was about $25.00, I believe. There are alternatives, however. For example, if you don't care about the grid ANY piece of tempered glass with a finished edge will work fine and be safe to use. Consider glass cutting boards, a piece of glass from the hardware store, etc.

I didn't know you were on 2Peas! When you're done posting them, please send me a PM over there so I can see them. My user id there is the same as my YouTube user id/channel name. I'd love to see what you did!

    Have a great day, ladies!

  12. Kathryn, this is a super awesome idea! Wowza! Love it!! :-) What did you use to cut out the shape of the letters on the chipboard base of your album? By the way, not sure we met yet on the GGS chat box, but my name is Arlene and I'm new to GGS starting in August! :-) Love your site! :-) Happy 4th!!

  13. Hi, Arlene! Yes, I saw you and Bona chatting it up overe there ~ thanks for stopping by! I'm glad you liked the site & I hope you continue to enjoy it! :D I used my Tonic serrated blade detail scissors to cut out all the parts of the letters I could reach and then used a craft knife for the parts that I couldn't. It took a while, but it turned out well in the end!
